Growing up in the 21st Century is a demanding and full-time job for our youth and it is important that they are given the tools to cope with the many toxic influences that may compromise their well-being. Over the last few decades, huge technological and cultural changes have transformed the lifestyles of people all over the world – largely for the better. But it’s all happened so fast we haven’t noticed that changes which may benefit adults aren’t always so good for our children. The side-effects of cultural, social & technological change is now, more than ever damaging our children’s ability to think and learn and behave.
We can see clearly that our children are changing and there is a distinct deterioration in the behaviour of many young people. We are seeing increased suicide rates, drug & alcohol abuse, eating disorders, promiscuity, learning disorders, violence & juvenile delinquency. All of which are side effects of our toxic lifestyles that are interfering with the natural developmental stages of our children. Tackling the effects of our environment on our children is not just a parental responsibility, but it is a social project that involves many key players. This is why The Kid Life Studio® addresses the issues influencing our children and their families. We are intent on providing solutions to “world-proof” our children. It all starts with awareness and accountability in finding a solution for the stresses and strains of daily living.
The thing is when we ask what is the main cause of this, there isn’t only one answer. We cannot just blame one specific area for this deterioration. This is a complex cultural problem and we need to look at all areas to come up with a solution for dealing with toxic influences in Childhood. The good news is that coaching is a way for us to bring childhood back into balance.
So to get clear on this rather complex topic of the Psychology of Childhood, I want us to look at some dictionary definitions first:
So what does Psychology mean: “It is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behaviour in a given context.”
Now let’s look at the definition of Childhood: “This is the state or period of being a child” Wow, so simple. The state of being a child. That’s it. But what does that really mean?
At The Kids Life Studio®, logic prevails that the definition when speaking of “The Psychology of Childhood” should simply mean this: “Educating, Motivating and Inspiring Children to be Happy.” Our global network of Kids Life Coaches all have one thing in common, we believe that every child is an individual and we don’t look at the problem, but we rather try to find a solution. It really doesn’t matter what the root cause of a child’s problem or behaviour is, the skills they need are simple. How to control the way they THINK, ACT & BEHAVE. We believe that sometimes adults just tend to overcomplicate things by overanalysing and psychologising things. There doesn’t always have to be a reason for the treason.
What all children need (not just those with problems) is a Kids Life Coach who is neutral and doesn’t judge on past behaviour or pre-determine the outcome. Somebody who is not interested in what has, can or might go wrong. A Kids Life Coach is really somebody with a “Looking Glass” that anticipates environmental risk factors that are common to all children and helps to put the skills in place to curb them from happening. Why wait until something has gone dramatically wrong before we intervene? Usually only when it is too late and a child is at high risk for depression or is displaying intense anxiety that therapy becomes part of the intervention.
Childhood, is a personal journey, but one which doesn’t have to be traveled alone. That is why this section of your course is going to take a look at how to put the child back into childhood by understanding the fundamentals of what it means to really be a child in this modern world of ours. Coaching children is about creating a new definition of childhood. A definition that embraces potential and leadership based on real-time experiences and lessons so that we can make a lasting impact on children that leads to them living a fulfilled life.
